KLIMB PRINTING INFORMATION

What do I need to do to be able to print with KLIMB?

KLIMB is freeware and I want it to remain that way, but I also want to keep improving it. To that end I've decided to only enable printing in return for making some improvement to KLIMB.

In return for you making some improvement to KLIMB and sending it to me, I'll send you a key to unlock and enable printing.

How can I help improve KLIMB?

What I'd love best right now for KLIMB is a makeover of its web site. I'm a programmer, not a web designer and it shows. So if somebody out there has some suggestions, let me know.

Narrow bike path Beautifying the web site notwithstanding, the main way I hope people will improve KLIMB is by bending roads–aligning them to their actual course. All the roads in the Ohio zone where I now live are bent, and I find it really makes KLIMB better (plus, it's really easy and fun to do now with the new Zoom feature).

Other ways I envision people being able to improve KLIMB include:

  • Aligning (bending) roads to match their actual course
  • Filling in missing road names or node names and elevations
  • Finding bugs
  • Documentation on how to install and run KLIMB on Mac
  • Prettifying KLIMB's web site
  • Suggesting new features
  • Adding a link to KLIMB on a biking website
  • Sending me money (always welcome)

Okay, I want to bend some of the roads near where I live, how do I do it?

  1. Check the Roads to Bend page to see which roads still need bending. You can also pick up the latest road data from here.
  2. Become superuser by going to the Tools->Options menu and turning it on.
  3. Select View->Show Bad Data to highlight all roads that still need bending.
  4. Right-click on the road you want to bend and select "Zoom road".
  5. In the zoom window, right-click on points that you want the road to pass through. You can also add elevation information for any route point.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5.

There are two problems to be aware of. First, KLIMB's map datum doesn't exactly match that used in the zoom window. This means that roads that are bent exactly right in the zoom window may not appear correct on KLIMB's main window.

Second, you have to strike a balance between making the road follow correctly and adding too many route points which will slow things down.

I've bent the roads, now what?

Save the updated data and send it to me. Use the File->Save User Data command to save the data and then send the resulting file to me.

I'm too lazy to do anything but I still want to print?
